About Lumen
Lumen Biofuels Pvt. Ltd. is an Indian biofuel producer that converts agricultural residue into bio-coal, a solid fuel that substitutes directly for coal in industrial boilers with minimal modification to existing equipment. Bio-coal is dense, low in moisture and high in calorific value, allowing users to cut emissions and reduce their exposure to coal price and supply volatility.
Lumen was founded by Peak Sustainability Ventures, a Mumbai-based global climate investment firm, to develop and scale this platform. The company's initial focus is the conversion of cotton stalk into bio-coal through a process known as torrefaction.
The first production unit, with a capacity of 40,000 tonnes per annum, is based in Gujarat and is being developed in partnership with Arvind Ltd., one of India's largest textile producers, who will also be the long-term offtaker for the plant's output. By sourcing residue directly from farmers, the model also creates an income stream from material that today has almost no value.
Lumen is building a platform across India that connects a decentralised, farm-level feedstock supply chain to committed offtake from large industrial buyers. Upon successful implementation of this first unit, Lumen intends to deploy similar plants across India.
